DBT (India) National Node

In the coming few months, computerized facilities providing access to ICCBnet will be simultaneously set up at three locations: M.S. University (MSU) of Baroda, The International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in New Delhi and the Ministry of Science and Technology's Department of Biotechnology (DBT). These facilities will be hooked up with the ICCBnet via satellite transmission.

According to Prof. Bharat B. Chattoo, who attended the network's inauguration, the first projects in which Indian scientists will take advantage of access to ICCBnet will be in the areas of agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry. They will include the development of disease-resistant strains of rice; study of disease-causing microorganisms such as the rice blast fungus; design of new medications, and studies related to biodiversity, particularly the documentation of research on microorganisms threatened with extinction. It is hoped that the network shall also provide a major thrust to work on photosynthesis. The DBT shall provide administrative and infrastructural support to the participating Indian scientists.
