Poland is the most veteran participant in ICCBnet because the network grew out of a UNESCO-sponsored Israeli-Polish project launched in 1994.

The computerized facility providing access to ICCBnet in Poland, located at the Polish Academy of Science's Institute for Biophysics and Biochemistry (IBB), has already been operating successfully for three years. In the coming few months, it will encompass new research institutions throughout the country and reach out to scientists in the neighboring countries.

ICCBnet in Poland will also offer a special new service: access to the "Biocellerator", a supercomputer that performs ultrafast computations related to gene structure. It is capable of scanning through millions of bits of genetic information within seconds, an operation that is extremely useful for scientists seeking to detect similarities between the genes of different organisms.

According to Prof. Wlodzimierz Zagorski, Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Biochemistry who plays a leading role in ICCBnet, most projects in which Polish scientists are taking advantage of access to ICCBnet are in the areas of agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry.
